Ancient Window

As with many of the other paintings in this Doorways and Walls gallery, arid Himalayan mountain scenes and sprawling ruins served as inspiration for this painting. In the Ladakh region of far north India, the terrain is especially dry- ochre yellow and dun colors all around, mountains and buildings alike.

Some structures were mere sections of ancient crumbling wall, others were dwellings still in use- walls cracked, patched, thick inset window frames. The stone and mud brick colors were contrasted here and there with startling greens at the bottoms of ravines and steep valleys.
